JACKSON -- The unemployment rate in Mississippi was 6.4 percent in April, down four-tenths of a percentage point from March, according to the state Department of Employment Security.
Wayne Gasson, DES' chief of labor market information, said Thursday that much of the improvement in April -- 21,000 new jobs -- could be attributed to farm workers going back to work and increased construction and recreational jobs.

DeSoto County had the lowest unemployment rate of 4.2 percent, followed by Rankin at 4.3 percent.
Clay County, hit with a number of plant closures, had the highest rate at 18.6 percent, followed by Noxubee County at 13.8 percent.
